ABOUT ME

Who am I, anyway?

My name is Leo! I'm a 19 year old public policy student at Rutgers University, In New Jersey. I enjoy listening to music, playing my bass guitar, reading science-fiction and fantasy novels, and sleeping. This website is my main hobby at the moment, I host it myself and do all of the html and css work. I also love my cat! I dislike mashed potatos, lifted trucks, and republicans. If anybody wants to talk to me, send me an email at leowagz602@gmail.com!

What type of music do I like

I love upbeat music that makes you jump around: punk, hardcore, altrock, reggae, ska, goth, blues, classic rock 'n roll, dixieland jazz, etc. I also love classical music, especially on the pipe organ. Truly a lovely sound. I listen to other stuff too. Basically, I like any music somebody actually worked hard on.

What do you enjoy in a book

I love a book that makes me think, but not in a boring way. Speculative fiction is fun because it analyzes current trends and exaggerates them in a future setting, and it gets you thinking on the state of our current world.
I also enjoy books that are just plain ol' FUN! Action, interesting characters, and intrigue go a long way. A Song of Ice and Fire is a great example of this. (I need to put some book reviews on this site eventually).
If there's one book I could recommend to anyone, it would be The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. Easily one of my top book series of all time.

Why did I make this website

I absolutely love the creative process of making one's own website. I first started back in 2019, when I got a book on HTML from my middle school's scholastic book fair. I soon made a phonograph themed website, leosphonographs.com. It was a simple affair, but it worked wonderfully, and I loved having my own spot on the web. Following COVID, I did little to update the website, and did not work on my HTML skills much, until around the time I got to college. I was sick and tired of social media, and its anti-human interface. I wanted a platform to express myself more freely. As a result, I came back to web design. I bought a small computer for $20 online, and set up this simple web server, and got coding! The old leosphonographs.com page was archived here as well. Since then I have been working on this site constantly. It's been fun, and I hope to keep it online for many years to come!

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

African or European?

Wait, so who the hell is this guy?

Hello reader! I'm Kyle, Leo's brother and a Junior in high school. My main interests are music, cinematography, and most forms of visual art-- anything creative, basically. I pride myself on my ability to have a conversation with anyone, regardless of their beliefs. That's not to say I don't have strong opinions, though. I, like my brothers, am very left-leaning, although I can't say I have the political know-how of Leo or the insane historical knowledge of my super secret other brother Calvin. I dislike unnecessary drama, that boring music you hear in malls and dentist offices, and salmon.

am I on the about me page?

Leo and I have worked on a wide range of projects together throughout our lives-- from Ramones cover bands to comics and video projects-- so when he told me he wanted to host his own website, I was excited to help. We came up with the sleepy robot character on the homepage together, and I wrote the music you may have heard there, along with animating the spinning head GIFs. I also plan to write some music reviews on the "music" page once Leo sets that up. I've been into programming for a few years as well, but unlike Leo I mostly stick to small games on Python and basic Java for my AP Computer Science course (shoutout to Scary Gary, Horrifying Hull, etc.) Over the summer me and Leo are planning to work on some basic games together to host here, but no promises…

Thoughts on music

I love music. I currently know how to play trumpet and guitar, and I'm currently learning drums, both with a normal set as well as a strange foot-pedal setup so I can play drums and guitar at the same time. I also produce music electronically and have dabbled in vocals, though I definitely need to work on that more. The main genres I enjoy are punk, hyperpop (and hyperpop-adjacent music), and alt-rock (that's a very vague term but I don't really know what else to call it). If I had to recommend a few songs, they would be "Everybody's dead!" by underscores, "Dream Sequence" by Jane Remover, and "Eyes" by Wine Lips.

I love all music-- yes, even the "bad" music. I have scoured the internet for the worst music I can find, and I have yet to find a genre that I can completely write off. I hear you asking now, "even country?" Yes! I listen to artists like Marty Robbins and Hank Williams, although most modern radio country has kind of debased into an amorphous gray genre-blob with some guy with a southern accent singing over trap drums. "Even modern rap?" Hell yeah! I listen to anything from thoughtful, lyrical artists like Playboi Carti and Yeat to mumble rappers like Denzel Curry and Biggie, and everything in between-- Baby Keem, ISSBROKIE, midwxst, the list goes on. I believe every song has value, even if that value is just laughing at how stupid it is (Leo and I both enjoy making fun of bad music together).
