Playboi Carti Invents Music?????

Last friday or so, well known rapper Playboi Carti released his long awaited new album "I Am Music", after a wait period of over five years. Personally, I've never been a huge Carti fan, but I have been known to enjoy some of his music from time to time. I listen to his self titled album from time to time, occasionally put on some tunes from Die Lit, and I enjoyed Whole Lotta Red. He has formula for writing his music, and when it hits, they can be enjoyable, when they don't, the results can be dissapointing. With five years to hone his craft, I was expecting a refinement of Carti's musical formula. Either that, or a new and unique sound. Unfortunately, we got neither. I AM MUSIC begins with a borderline unlistenable song titled POP OUT which sounds like an active construction sight, with a grating, amateurish beat. Songs like this, and OPM BABI represent the worst Carti has to offer. The majority of other songs are mostly uninteresting and boring, doing little new other than a crappy sounding low voice that make it sound like Carti smoked 50 packs a day. However, the album did have several highlights. Rather lie, produced by Ramzoid, was phenominal, and it was followed by FINE SHIT, an example of the classic Carti formula working well. TWIN TRIM was an excellent song as well, but it is notable due to the fact that Carti does not appear on the song at all, it is entirely performed by Lil Uzi Vert. If the few good songs were compiled into an EP, this could have been a welcome, if not insignificant, addition to the Carti Discography. Unfortunately, the dearth of amateurish, inconsistent, boring, and sometimes unlistenable music kills the album. It makes one wonder if Carti really is about the music, or just about the money. Maybe a more apt title would be I AM SELLOUT.
